I’ve been thinking about starting my own business for a long time, since the moment I realized jobs were a thing and I’d eventually have to one, to be honest. Entrepreneurship has always been in my blood, which I’ll get into during another post. But for now, I just want to introduce you to who I am, let you know where I am and where I want to be, and ask you to come on this journey with me.
My name is Tanya. Pronounced like Tonya Harding without all of the violence.
And I’ve been starting businesses / organizations since I was fifteen or sixteen.
I founded my high school newspaper, the digital arm for a non-profit that served local teens, the digital arm for an AIDS awareness group in college, a profitable textbook swapping business, a publishing platform for original LGBTQ fiction, a clothing line, an e-commerce business, and a marketing company.
Some of those ventures were more successful than others but I also never really had the time to pursue them seriously. I had a “real job.”
Since the age of 18, I’ve been pursuing a career in Marketing. I have a B.S. in Advertising (which I always joke is a Bull Shitter’s degree). And I’ve been working at marketing agencies for about ten years.
When I was 18, I set this goal for myself that I’d be earning six figures by the time I turned thirty and I’d have my own successful business by the time I turned thirty-five.
Not to brag, but I crushed that first goal by the time I was 28. And as I began to approach 30, I grew antsy. I didn’t enjoy my job at all and the entrepreneurial bug began to bite. I started a new business on the side when I turned 29, in an industry I had no experience in (another story for another time) and unsurprisingly, it wasn’t all that successful.
Regardless of that failure, I made plans to leave my job in 2017. I started paying off debts, saving a little money, readjusted my investment strategy and left my job with a bit of a nest egg and zero plans to the corporate world.
HOW WILL I MAKE MONEY AND SURVIVE THOUGH???
That’s what I’m struggling with right now. With a completely open playing field, where do I begin?
So many successful entrepreneurs share their success stories in retrospect, they gloss over the hard times and tell this general story of being persistent, working hard, and…BOOM! Success!
This blog is not that. This blog is about my journey, the experiments, the failures, and the tips and tricks I learn on the way. I’m hopeful that this journey will end in success, but either way, I’d love it if you joined me on the way. 🙂
